* 18 *The Lord told Elijah to show himself to Ahab & He would send rain. Obadiah, the govenor of Ahab's house, feared the Lord. He had hid 100 prophets by 50 and fed them with bread and water. Ahab sent him to find grass so they would not lose all of the beasts. As Obadiah was in the way, Elijah met him & told him to tell Ahab he was here. Obadiah was afraid that Elijah would disappear, but was assured that Elijah would meet Ahab that day. Elijah told Ahab to gather the prophets at Mt. Carmel. He asked the people how long they would be divided between two opinons? If the LORD was God follow Him. If Baal, then follow him. Alters were to be built for God and Baal. The God that answered by fire was the true God. Baal's priests prayed from morning till evening with no answer. Elijah repaired the LORD's alter that was broken. He built an altar with 12 stones putting a trench about the alter. He put the bulllock and the wood in order and had them pour 12 barrels of water on the altar. He prayed, "Lord, hear me so this people will know that you're the LORD and that you've turned their heart back again." The fire of the LORD fell and burnt the sacrifice, wood, stones, dust, and water in the trench. The people said, "The LORD is the God." Elijah had them slay the prophets of Baal. Elijah told Ahab to go because there was the sound of abundance of rain.
* 19 *When Ahab told Jezebel what Elijah had done, she sent word to him that if she hadn't killed him by tomorrow, for the gods to do the same to her. Elijah left his servant at Beersheba and went a days journey into the wilderness. He sat under a juniper tree and asked to die. As he lay & slept, an angel woke him saying "Arise and eat." The angel did this twice. He went 40 days and nights on the strength of that meal and came to Horeb the mount of God. He lodged in a cave. The Lord asked him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" Elijah said, "I have been jealous for the LORD God of hosts. They have slain your prophets - only I am left - and they are trying to kill me." The Lord told him to annoint Hazael to be king of Syria, Jehu to be king of Israel, Elisha to be prophet in his place. "I have 7000 which have not bowed to Baal." He found Elisha plowing with 12 yoke of oxen. Elisha killed a yoke of oxen gave the people to eat, and arose and followed Elisha and ministered unto him.
* 20 *Benhadad king of Syria besieged Samaria. He sent word to Ahab, "Your silver & gold, your wives & children are mine." Ahab said "I am thine, & all that I have" Benhadad sent word again, "My servants will come to search your houses and will take what is desirable in your eyes." The elders and people told Ahab to not accept this. The Lord sent a prophet to Ahab saying that the LORD would deliver the great multitude into his hand so they would know that he was the LORD. The Syrians fled and said, "Their gods are gods of the hills; but we will fight them in the plain and shall be stronger than they. After a year, Benhadad went to Aphek to fight Israel. Israel slew 100,000 Syrians in one day. The rest fled to Aphek. Benhadad sent word, "I pray thee, Let me live." Ahab sent him away with a covenant. A man came to Ahab and told him that a prisoner in his care had escaped. It was a fine of a talent of silver or his life. Ahab told him that he had convicted himself. The man told him that, the Lord had said because Ahab had let a a man go that the LORD had appointed for utter destruction it would be Ahab's life in exchange.
* 21 *Ahab wanted to buy Naboth's vineyard that was near the palace. But Naboth refused to sell his father's inheritance. As Ahab pouted, Jezebel, his wife, told him that she would give him Naboth's vineyard. She sent word to the officials in the kings name for them to falsely accuse Naboth of blasphemy and to slay him. When they sent word that the deed was done; Jezebel sent Ahab to take the vineyard. The LORD sent Elijah to tell Ahab that where the dogs had licked Naboth's blood -- they would lick his
* 22 *The king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah to go with him to fight to regain Ramothgilead. When Jehoshaphat agreed, Ahab called for the prophets who told him to go. Jehoshaphat asked if there wasn't a prophet of the LORD that they could ask. Ahab said there is Micaiah-but I hate him because he prophesies evil of me. The messengers that were sent for Micaiah requested that he say good - as had the other prophets. Micaiah responded that he would say whatever the Lord told him to say.Micaiah saw Israel on the hills scattered as sheep without a shepherd. Ahab told them to put Micaiah into prison until he returned. Micaiah said if you do return in peace the Lord has not spoken by me. Ahab was slain. Ahaziah reigned in his stead. Jehoshaphat, Asa's son began to reign in Judah in the 4th year of Ahab. He turned not aside from doing right in the LORD's eyes. When Jehoshaphat died, Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
