The Old Testament Book of Habakkuk

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls; Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

Habakkuk 3:17-18

The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. ...

Habakkuk 3:19

* CHAP * COMMENTS

The Burden Which Habakkuk the Prophet did see.
* 1 * Habakkuk's First Complaint

How Long Shall I cry and you will not hear?

How Long Shall I cry of violence and you will not save?

Why do you show me iniquity, grievance, spoiling and violence?

The law is paralyzed, the wicked doth compass about the righteous.

The Lord's Answer

I will work a work in your days, which you will not believe, though it be told you.I raise up the Chaldeans to march through the land.

> They are bitter and hasty; terrible and dreadful:

> Their horses are swifter than leopards, more fierce than evening wolves.

> Their horsemen shall spread themselves & shall come from afar.

> They shall come all for violence:

> They shall scoff at kings and deride every strong hold.

> Then he shall pass over and offend.

> He will impute his power unto his god.

Habakkuk's Second Complaint

Are you not from everlasting?

You have established them for correction.

Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, You can't look on iniquity.

Why do you hold your tongue when the wicked devour the man more righteous than he?

Men are taken in their net & gathered as fish in the sea.

They sacrifice to their net & burn incense to their dragnet.

Shall they continue to slay the nations?

* 2 * I will see what the Lord will answer me.

The response of the Lord

Write the vision, make it plain. It is for an appointed time. At the end it will speak and not lie.

If it delays-wait for it-it will surely come. It won't delay long.

The just shall live by his faith.

He has transgressed by wine

Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his. Woe to him that gains an evil gain. Woe to him that builds a town with blood and establishes a city with iniquity. Woe to him that gives his neighbor drink. What profit is the graven image?

Woe to him that saith to the wood - "AWAKE" - to the stone - "ARISE, IT SHALL TEACH."

The LORD is in his holy temple - let all the earth keep silence before him.

* 3 *The Prayer of Habakkuk

Lord - I have heard your speech & was afraid.

O Lord, in wrath remember mercy.

The Lord came from Teman & the Holy One from Mt. Paran. His glory covered the heavens & the earth was full of his praise. His brightness was as the light. Before him went pestilence. He drove asunder the nations. His ways are everlasting. I saw the tents of Ethiopia in affliction, The land of Midian trembled. You marched through the land in indignation. You threshed the heathen in anger. You went forth to save your people.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, and fruit be not on the vines, the labor of the olive fail, the fields yield no food. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will joy in the God of my salvation.
