The Old Testament Book of Hosea
Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he
shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just
shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
Hosea 14:9
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* CHAP * COMMENTS
The word of the LORD that came to Hosea the son of Beeri in the days of
Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, & Hezekiah (Judah's kings) & Jeroboam (Israel's king).
* 1 *The Lord tells Hosea to take a prostitute for a wife because the land
has committed a great whoredom by leaving the LORD. Hosea married
Gomer. She has a son, the Lord names him Jezreel; a daughter, the
Lord names "Not having obtained mercy"; another son, the Lord names
"Not my people".Yet the number of the children of Israel will be as the sand
of the sea.
* 2 *Plead with your mother that she put away her whoredoms, lest I set her
as a dry land & slay her with thirst. I will not have mercy on her
children. I will make a wall that she will not find her paths. Though
she seek she will not find her lovers. She didn't know that I gave
her corn, wine, and oil; and multiplied her silver & gold. I'll take
my corn & wine; and recover my wool & flax. I will cause her mirth to
cease. I'll destroy her vines & figs which she said were the rewards
her lovers had given her. I will allure her. At that day she'll call
me "My Husband" and not "My Lord". I will betroth you unto me forever
in righteousness, judgement, lovingkindness & mercies. I will have
mercy on her that had not obtained mercy and will say to them that
were not my people, "You are my People", and they will say "You are
my God."
* 3 *God told Hosea to love an adulteress. He bought her to him for 15 pieces
of silver, a homer and a half of barley. Hosea told her to abide with
him and not play the harlot because Israel would be many days without
king or an ephod & teraphim. But they will return and seek God.
* 4 *The Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because
there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. For
this reason the land will mourn. My people are destroyed for lack of
knowledge. I will change their glory into shame. I will punish them
for their ways.
* 5 *Give ear, judgement is toward you. You've been a snare & a net. I know
Ephraim & Israel is not hid. They won't turn to their God. The spirit
of whoredoms is in their midst. Israel, Ephraim, and Judah will fall.
They will seek the Lord, but they won't find him. He has withdrawn
from them.I will be as a lion to Ephraim and Judah. I will take away
and none will rescue. I'll return to my place until they acknowledge
their offence and seek my face:
* 6 *Let us return to the LORD for he has torn and will heal. Ephraim, Judah
what will I do unto you. I desired mercy and not sacrifice; and the
knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. They've transgressed the
covenant: they've dealt treacherously against me. The priests murder
by consent as troops of robbers wait for a man.
* 7 *I would have healed Israel, but the iniquity of Ephraim and Samaria was
discovered. They consider not that I remember all their wickedness.
They make the king glad with their wickedness. They're all adulterers.
There is none among them that calls unto me. Woe is unto them! for
they have fled from me. Though I redeemed them, they've spoken lies
against me. They have not cried unto me with their heart.
* 8 *Israel has cast off the thing that is good. My anger is kindled against
them. The calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces. They have sown
the wind and will reap the shirlwind. They sacrifice my offerings but
the LORD accepts them not. He will remember their iniquity. Israel
has forgotten his maker.
* 9 *Israel, don't rejoice as other people. You've went whoring from your
God. You have loved a reward. Ephraim will return to Egypt and will
eat unclean things in Assyria. What will you do in the solemn day?
The days of visitation and recompence are come. They have deeply
corrupted themselves. He will remember their iniquity & visit their
sins. God will cast them away because they didn't hearken unto him.
* 10 *Israel is an empty vine. Their heart is divided. He'll break down their
alters. They have swore falsely. Samaria's king is cut off as foam on
the water. The high places of Aven shall be destroyed. Israel you've
sinned since the days of Gibeah. I desire to chastise them. Sow to
yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy. It is time to seek the
Lord till he come and rain righteousness upon you. You have plowed
wickedness & reaped iniquity. You've eaten the fruit of lies because
you trusted in your way and the multitude of your mighty men.
* 11 *When Israel was a child I loved him and called my son out of Egypt. I
taught Ephraim taking them by their arms, but the didn't know that I
healed them. I drew them with bands of love and laid meat unto them.
My people are bent to backsliding from me. How will I give you up?
My heart is turned within me. I will not execute the fierceness of my
anger. I am God and not man. Ephraim compasses me with lies, Israel
with deceit: But Judah yet rules with God, and is faithful with the
saints.
* 12 *Ephriam follows after the east wind. He increases lies and desolation.
The Lord also has a controversy with Judah and will punish Jacob
according to his ways. Turn to your God: Keep mercy and judgement,
and wait on your God continually.
* 13 *They sin more and more. They will be as the dew that passes away. I am
the Lord thy God & you shall know no god but me: there is no savior
beside me. Their heart was exalted, therefore they've forgotten me.
I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her whelps. Israel you've
destroyed yourself, but in me is your help. Samaria will become
desolate; for she has rebelled against her God.
* 14 *Israel return to the LORD your God. You have fallen by your iniquity.
Say unto the Lord, "Take away all iniquity. We will not say any more
to the work of our hands, you're our gods: for in thee the fatherless
finds mercy." I will heal their backsliding. I will love them freely:
for my anger is turned away. Who is wise and he shall understand,
prudent and he shall know them. The ways of the LORD are right, and
the just will walk in them: but the transgressors will fall therein.
