The Old Testament Book of Isaiah
Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine
eyes: cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed,
judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together,
saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Isaiah 1:16-18 KJV

* CHAP * COMMENTS
The vision of Isaiah - the son of Amoz - which he saw concerning
Judah & Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
* 1 *The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib; but Israel
does not know. My people do not consider. Wash you - Make you clean
Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do
evil. Learn to do well; seek judgement. Relieve the oppressed.
Judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now and let us
reason together saith the LORD. Thou your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they
shall be like wool. Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of
thieves. Everyone loves gifts. Therefore saith the LORD, the mighty
one of Israel. I will turn my hand upon thee and purely purge away
thy dross, and take away all thy tin.
* 2 *And it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the
Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains and all
nations will flow into it. For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among
the nations and they shall beat their swords into plow shares and
their spears into pruning hooks: Nation will not lift sword up
against nation. Neither shall they learn war any more. O house of
Jacob -- Let us walk in the light of the Lord. Their land is full
of idols. The day of the Lord of hosts will be upon everyone that
is proud and lofty.
* 3 *The Lord of hosts takes away from Judah the stay & the staff. The
people will be oppressed. Everyone by another and everyone by his
neighbor. Jerusalem is ruined and Judah is fallen because their
tongue and their doings are against the Lord. Say to the righteous
that it will be well with them - they shall eat the fruit of their
doings. As for my people - children are their oppressors, women rule
over them. O my people - they that lead thee cause thee to err.
What mean ye - that ye beat my people to pices and grind the faces of
the poor? Because the daughteres of Zion are haughty and walk with
stretched forth necks & wanton eyes. Therefore the Lord will smite.
* 4 *In that day 7 women shall take hold of one man and say we will eat our
own bread & wear our own apparel only let us be called by thy name to
take away our reproach. He that is left in Zion will be called Holy
when the Lord will have washed away tghe filth. And there shall be a
tabernacle for a shadow from the heat in the day and a cover from
storm and rain.
* 5 *My beloved has a vineyard in a fruitfull hill on which he bestowed much
labor. But it brought forth wild grapes. What could I have done that
I have not done? I will lay it waste. For the vineyard of the Lord
of hosts is the House of Israel - and the men of Judah his pleasant
plant. Woe to them that join house to house. Woe to them that rise up
early to follow strong drink. My people have gone into captivity
because they have no knowledge. Woe to them that draw iniquity with
cords of vanity and sin as if it were with a cart rope. Woe to them
that call evil good and good evil. Woe to them that are wise in their
own eyes. Woe to them that are mighty to drink wine. The anger of the
Lord is kindled against his people & his had is stretched out still.
* 6 *I saw the Lord sitting on a high throne the year that King Uzziah died.
The seraphims stood & cried Holy Holy Holy is the Lord of Hosts: The
whole earth is full of his glory. I said woe is me because I am a man
of unclean lips and my eyes have seen the Lord of Hosts. A seraphim
flew to me and touched my mouth with a live coal & said your inquity
is taken away. The Lord asked - Whom shall I send? I said - Here am
I, send me. The Lord said, Go & tell this people - hear but don't
understand, See - but don't perceive lest they convert & are healed.
* 7 *The King of Syria and the King of Israel went to war against Jerusalem
in the days of Ahaz. -- But they could not prevail against it. The
Lord told Isaiah to tell Ahaz to fear not because their intentions
would not come to pass. Although the lord offered to give Ahaz a sign
Ahaz refused. But the Lord himself will give a sign. A virgin will
conceive and bear a son and will call his name Immanuel. Before the
child will know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that
you hate will be forsaken of both her kings.
* 8 *I went unto the prophetess and she conceived. The lord said call his
name Mahershalalhashbaz. Before he is able to cry my father or my
mother the riches of Damascus & Samaria will be taken away. Because
the people reject the waters of Shiloah, the Lord brings on them the
waters of the river - even the King of Assyria. Don't say a
confederacy. Don't fear their fear. Sanctify the Lord of hosts. Let
him be your fear and dread, and he will be a sanctuary. But for
Israel and Jerusalem He will be a rock of offence. Should not a
people seek unto their God?
* 9 *It won't be like when He first lightly afflicted the land of Zebulin
and Naphtali. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great
light. For unto us a Child is born. His name will be called Wonderful,
the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace. Israel will be devoured because
the people do not seek the Lord of Hosts. The leaders of this people
cause them to err. Everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer, & every
mouth speakerth folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but
his hand is stretched out still.
* 10 *Woe to those who make unrighteous decrees - to defraud the needy, the
poor -- the widow and the fatherless. The Assyrian is the rod of my
anger - but he doesn't think so. He believes he has succeeded by the
strength of his hand and his wisdom. Shall the axe boast against him
that heweth therewith. O my people, be not afraid of the Assyrian.
He shall smite thee with a rod - but in a little while the Lord of
Hosts shall set a scourge for him & his burden will be taken away.
* 11 *There will be a root of Jesse which will stand for an ensign of the
people. The gentiles will seek to it. The Lord will a second time set
his hand to recover the remnant of his people.
* 12 *In that day you will say, O Lord - I will praise thee. God is my
salvation. I will trust & not be afraid. Sing unto the Lord - for he
hath done excellent things. This is known in all the earth.
* 13 *The burden of Babylon. Howl for the day of the Lord is at hand. I will
punish the world for their evil. I will stir the Medes against them.
And Babylon shall be as when God overthrew Sodom & Gomorrah. It will
never be inhabited - neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to
generation. But Wild beasts of the desert shall lie there.
* 14 *The Lord will have mercy on Jacob. In that day the Lord will give you
rest from thy sorrow - and thy fear, and the hard bondage wherein you
served. How art you fallen from heaven; O Lucifer-son of the morning.
I will cut off from Babylon the name, & remnant, & son, & nephew
saith the Lord. I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my
mountains tread him under foot. The Lord has purposed - and who will
disannul it?
* 15 *The Burden of Moab. In the night Ar and Kir of Moab are laid waste.
Moab shall howl over Nebo and Medeba. Heshban and Elealeh shall cry.
My heart will cry for Moab. His fugitives will flee unto Zoar. The
waters of Dimon shall be full of blood.
* 16 *Take counsel - execute judgement; hide the outcasts; betray not him
that wandereth. Let my outcasts dwell with thee Moab. And in mercy
will thy throne be established. But now the Lord has spoken. Within
3 years - as the years of a hireling and the glory of Moab will be
contemned and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.
* 17 *The Burden of Damascus. Behold - Dalmascus is taken away from being a
city. The cities of Aroer are forsaken. That day a man will look to
his Maker & not the work of his hands. In that day his strong cities
shall be as a forsaken bough which they left because of the children
of Israel. There shall be desolation because thou hast forgotten the
God of thy salvation and have not been mindful of the rock of thy
strength. Woe to the multitude of many people and to the rushing of
nations. At evening tide - trouble and before the morning he is not.
This is the portion of them that spoil and rob us.
* 18 *Woe to the land shadowing with wings beyond the rivers of Ethiopia that
sends ambassadors by sea. Inhabitants of the world - watch when he
lifts up an ensign on the mountain.
* 19 *The Burden of Egypt. The Egyptian will be set against the Egyptian. The
The Egyptian will I give over into the hand of a cruel Lord. Where
are thy wise men? Let them tell & know what the Lord of hosts hath
purposed upon Egypt. In that day there will be an alter to the Lord
in the midst of Egypt. The Egyptians will know the Lord and do
sacrifice. Israel will be the 3rd with Egypt & Asyria - a blessing in
the midst of the land.
* 20 *As Isaiah walked naked & barefoot 3 years so shall the King of Assyria
lead away the Egyptians prisoners and the Ethiopians captives.
* 21 *The Burden of the Desert of the Sea. The Lord said go set a watchman.
let him declare what he sees. A chariot of men, a couple of horsemen.
Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods
hath broken unto the ground.
* *The Burden of Dumah. Watchman, what of the night?
* *The Burden upon Arabia. Within a year and all the glory of Kedar shall
fail - for the Lord God of Israel hath spoken it.
* 22 *The Burden of the valley of vision. Why have you gon to the housetops.
It is the day of trouble by the Lord God of hosts. You've seen there
are many breaches of the City of David. But you did not look to the
Maker thereof, neither had respect to him that fashioned it long ago.
Tell the treasurer - even Shebna "The Lord will carry you away with a
mighty captivity & will surely cover you. I will call my servant
Eliakim-the son of Hilkiah- clothe him with thy robe, commit thy
government into his hand. THe key of the house of David will I lay
on his shoulder. He shall open & none shall shut. He shall shut &
none shall open. I will fasten him for a nail in a sure place. The
nail that is in a sure place shall be removed and the burden that
was upon it shall be cut off.
* 23 *The Burden of Tyre. Tarshish is laid waste. Who has taken counsel
against Tyre? The Lord of Hosts has purposed it - to bring into
contempt the honorable of the earth. Tyre will be forgotten 70 years.
At the end of 70 years, the Lord will visit Tyre.
* 24 *The Lord makes the earth empty and scatters the inhabitants. As with
the people-so the priest. The haughty of the earth languish. The
inhabitants have defiled the earth by transgressing and changing the
laws. The noise of them that rejoice ends. All joy is darkened. It
will be as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. Wherefore
glorify the Lord. The earth is utterly broken down. In that day -
the Lord will punish the high ones and the kings of the earth.
* 25 *O Lord, You are my God - I will exalt thee, and praise thy name; for
you have done wonderful things. Thy counsels of old are faithfulness
and truth. You have been a strength to the poor, the needing in his
distress - a refusge from the storm. In this mountain the Lord will
make a feast unto all people. He will swallow up death in victory and
will wipe away tears from off all faces. In that day it will be said,
Lo this is our God!
* 26 *In that Day, shall this song be sang in the land of Judah. You will keep
him in perfect peace whose mind is staid on thee. Trust in the Lord
forever. In Him is everlasting strength. The way of the just is
uprightness. I have desired thee in the night, I will seek you early.
When your judgements are in the earth, the inhabitants will learn
righteousness. The wicked will not learn righteousness, though favor
be shewed him. Behold the Lord comes out of his place to punish the
inhabitants of the earth.
* 27 *In that day the Lord will punish the leviathon & shall slay the dragon
that is in the sea. Fury is not in me. Those of Jacob will take root.
Israel will bud & fill the earth with fruit. It is a people of no
understanding. He that made them will not have mercy - he that
formed them will show them no favor.
* 28 *Woe to the crown of pride - to the drunkards of Ephraim whose beauty is
a fading flower. They have erred through wine. The priest & the
prophet have erred through strong drink. They err in vision & stumble
in judgement. There is no place clean. Who will he teach knowledge?
Precept must be on precept, line upon line. Hear the word of the
Lord. I lay in Zion a precious corner stone. Give ear - Hear my
voice. Doth the plowman plow all day to sow. His God doth instruct
him to discretion.
* 29 *Woe to Ariel. I will distress ARiel. Thou shalt be brought down. The
Lord has poured upon you the spirt of deep sleep and has closed your
eyes. This people draw near me with their mouth - and with their lips
do honor me but have removed their heart far from me. The wisdom of
their wise men will perish. Woe to them that seek deep to hide their
counsel from the Lord. Shall the thing formed say of him that framed
it - "He had no understanding".
* 30 *Woe to the rebellious children. They take counsel but not mine. They go
to Egypt trusting in Pharaoh but the strength of Pharaoh will be
their shame. Egypt will be ashamed of a people that can't profit
them. Write it in a table & in a book - this is a rebellious people,
lying children that will not hear the law of the Lord. They tell the
seers to see not; the prophets to prophesy deceits; and to turn aside
out of the way. This iniquity will be as a sudden breech in a high
wall. 1000 will flee at the rebuke of 1. The Lord will wait , that he
may be gracious to you.
* 31 *Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help. They do not seek the Lord
He is wise and will arise against the house of the evildoers. The
Egyptians are men and not God. When the Lord shall stretch out his
hand both he that helps and he that is helped shall fall down
together. Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have
deeply revolted. In that day every man shall cast away his idols.
Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword.
* 32 *Behold a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes rule in
judgement. The eyes of them that see will not be dim, the ears of
them that hear will hearken. The heart of the rash will understand
knowledge. The vile won't be called liberal; nor the curl bountiful.
The vile will speak villany and practice hypocrisy. The instruments
of the churl are evil. Rise up women that are at ease. You will be
troubled many days and years. Thorns and briers will come upon the
land of my people and on the houses of joy. The palaces will be
forsaken until the spirt is poured on us from on high. Then judgement
will dwell in the wilderness. The work of righteousness will be
peace. The effect of righteousness-quietness and assurance forever.
Blessed are ye that sow beside the waters and send forth the feet
the ox and the ass.
* 33 * Woe to thee that spoilest and was not spoiled, that dealest
treacherously. When you cease to spoil - you will be spoiled.
O Lord, be gracious unto us; we've waited for you: be our salvation
in time of trouble. The Lord is exalted: for he dwelleth on high:
The fear of the Lord is his treasure. The valiant onces will cry
without: The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: The
earth mourns. Now will I rise, sait the Lord; now will I be exalted.
Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; ye that are near,
acknowledge my might. He that walks righteously, speaks uprightly,
despises the gain of oppression, does not take bribes, does not
shed blood, and keeps his eyes from seeing evil; will dwell on high.
Bread shall be given him. His water will be sure. The Lord is our
judge, lawgiver, and king -- he will save us.
* 34 * Let the earth and all that is therein hear. The Lord's indignation
is upon all nations. His fury is on all their armies: He hath
completely destroyed them. All the host of heaven shall be disolved,
and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll. The sword of
the Lord is filled with blood. It is the day of the Lord's vengeance.
The land will be burning pitch that will not be quenched. He will
stretch out upon it the lines of confusions and the stones of
emptiness. Thorns will come up in the palaces. Nettles and brambles
in the fortress. Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read: No
one of these shall fail. He has cast the lot for them. His hand
had divided it unto them by line: They will possess it forever.
* 35 * The Wilderness will be glad for them. Strengthen the weak hands and
confirm the feeble knees. Say to the fearful - Be strong, fear not
your God will come with a vengeance. He will save you. The eyes
of the blind will be opened. The ears of the deaf will be unstopped.
The lame man will leap as a hart. The tongue of the dumb will sing.
Water will break out in the wilderness. A highway will be there. It
shall be called the way of holiness. The redeemed will walk there.
* 36 * In the 14th year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, King of Assyria
invaded and took the defensed cities of Judah. Rabshakeh was sent by
the King of Assyria to Jerusalem with a great army. He told Eliakim,
Shebna, and Joah to tell Hezekiah that the great King of Assyria
wanted to know where he was placing his confidence. If you trust in
Egypt-it is a broken reed. If you trust in the Lord your God, isn't
that the alters whose high places Hezekiah hath taken away? Give
hostages to my Master - The king of Assyria. The LORD told me to
destroy this land. Eliakim,Shebna, and Joah requested that he speak
Not Hebrew but Assyrian. Rabshakeh cried with a loud voice in Hebrew
"Let not Hezekiah deceive you - he will not be able to deliver you.
Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord. Make an agreement
with me and stay at home until I move you to a land like your own
land, a land of corn and wine. Has any of the other gods delivered
his land out of the king of Assyria?" Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said
not a word - as commanded by Hezekiah-and returned to report to him.
* 37 * When Hezekiah heard it, he rent his clothes and went in sackcloth to
the house of the Lord. He sent unto Isaiah the prophet. Isaiah said
that the LORD had said to not be afraid of what they had heard. God
would cause him to hear a rumour that would make him return to his
own land where he would be killed. Rabshakeh returned and found his
king warring with Libnah. He sent messengers to Hezekiah saying
"Let not your God decieve you by saying that Jerusalem will not be
given to the king of Assyria. Have the gods of the nations delivered
them?" When Hezekiah received the letter he went into the Lord's
house and spread it before the LORD, and prayed "O LORD of hosts,
thou and thou alone are the God of all the kingdoms of the earth:
You have made heaven and earth. See and hear what Sennacherib has
said to reproach the living God. Save us from his hand so that all
may know that you are the LORD." Isaiah sent the words of the Lord
to Hezekiah. "Sennacherib has reproached & blasphemed the Holy One
of Israel. By his servants he has reproached the Lord. But I know
his abode, his going out, and his coming in, and his rage against
me. I will put my hook in his nose and my bridle in his lips and
send him back the way he has come. He will not come into this city
nor shoot an arrow there." The angel of the Lord smote 185,000 of
of the Assyrian army. Two of his sons smote him as he worshipped
Nisroch his god. Another of his sons ruled in his stead.
* 38 * Hezekiah was sick unto death. Isaiah told him that the Lord had said
to set his house in order for he would die. Hezekiah wept & prayed.
God heard his prayer and granted him 15 years. As a sign the sun
went backwards 10 degrees.
The Text also includes the writing of King Hezekiah on this event.
* 39 * The King of Babylon sent letters and presents to Hezekiah when he
heard that he had been sick and had recovered. Hezekiah was glad of
them and showed him all his treasures. Isaiah the prophet asked
what these men had said and from where had they come? Hezekiah said
Babylon. Isaiah asked what have they seen? Hezekiah answered I have
showed them everything. Isaiah said the Lord says "The day is
coming that everything in your house will be taken to Babylon. Even
your sons will be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
Hezekiah answered, "Good is the word of the LORD. For there shall
be peace and truth in my days."
* 40 * Comfort ye my people saith your God. Tell Jerusalem her iniquity is
pardoned. The voice that cries in the wilderness,"Prepare ye the way
of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God." The
glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it. All
flesh is grass, & all the goodliness is as the flower of the field.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the spirit of the
LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth
The flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.
The Lord God will come with strong hand. His reward is with him. He
shall feed his flock like a shepherd. Who has directed the spirit of
the LORD? All nations before him are as nothing. To whom will you
liken God? Lift up your eyes on high and behold who hath created
these. Why do you say, O Jacob, O Israel, my way is hid from the
LORD. Have you not known that the LORD fainteth not, neither is
weary. He gives power to the faint. They that wait on the LORD shall
renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they
shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
* 41 * Keep silence before me, O Islands. Let the people renew their
strength. Who raised the righteous man from the east. I the LORD,
the first, and with the last; I am he. Israel you are my servant,
the seed of Abraham my friend. Fear not for I am with thee. Be not
dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee: I will hold your
right hand. I will make you a sharp new threshing instrument and you
will thresh the mountains. You will rejoice in the Lord. When the
poor need water and there is none, I the Lord will hear them.Produce
your cause, Show us what shall happen that we may know that ye are
gods. You are worse than nothing. I have raised one up from the
North that will come from the rising of the sun. They are all vanity
their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.
* 42 * Behold my servant whom I uphold; I've put my spirit upon him; he will
bring forth judgement to the Gentiles. He will not cry nor lift up
nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.A bruised reed he will
will not break. He will not fail until he has set judgement in the
earth. Thus saith God the LORD, that created the heavens. I the LORD
have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, & will
keep thee; to open blind eyes. My glory will I not give to another,
neither my praise to graven images. I tell you of new things before
they spring forth. Sing unto the Lord a new song. Let the wilderness
& the city lift up their voice. The LORD shall go forth as a mighty
man. I have held my peace for a long time. Now I will destroy and
devour at once. I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not,
in paths they have not known: I will make darkness light and crooked
things straight. They that trust in gaven images will be greatly
ashamed. But this is a people robbed and spoiled. Who but the LORD
gave Jacob for a spoil and Israel to the robbers? They would not
walk in his ways nor were they obedient unto his law.
* 43 * O Jacob, O Israel fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called
thee by my name; thou art mine. When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you; When you walk through the fire you will not be
burned. I am the LORD your God. I will bring your seed from the
ends of the earth. Let the nations be gathered together. Who can
declare this? You are my witnesses saith the LORD, and my servant
servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and
understand that I am he: befoe me there was no God formed, neither
shall there be after me. There is none that can deliver out of my
hand. Don't remember or consider the things of old. I will do a new
thing. I will make a way in the wilderness, & rivers in the desert.
But you have not called on me, O Jacob. You have been weary of me, O
Israel. You have not honored me with your sacrifices. You have
wearied me with your iniquities. I am he that blots out your
transgressions for mine own sake. Put me in remembrance: Let us
plead together: declare thou, that that may be justified.
* 44 * Fear not, O Jacob my servant; and Jesurun whom I have chosen. I will
pour my spirit upon your seed and my blessing on your offspring.
Thus saith the LORD; I am the first, and I am the last; beside me
there is no God. Fear ye not, neither be afraid: Is there a God
beside me? Who hath formed a god or molten a graven image that is
profitable for nothing? He burns part of a tree in the fire to warm
himself, and with the residue he makes a god. They have not known
nor understood. There is no knowledge to say shall I fall down to
the stock of a tree? Remember O Jacob & Israel; you're my servant:
You will not be forgotten of me. I have blotted out thy sins. The
Lord hath redeemed Jacob. Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and
he that formed you from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all
things. I stretched forth the heavens alone; I said Cyrus is my
shepherd and will perform all my pleasure.
* 45 * The Lord says to Cyrus his annointed, I will go before you and make
the crooked places straight: I will give you treasures of darkness
so you will know that I that call thee am the God of Israel. I have
called you -- though you did not know me. There is no God beside me:
Woe to him that strives with his Maker! Woe to him that says to his
father, What begettest thou? Ask me of things to come. I have made
the earth and created man on it. They shall be confused together
that are makers of idols. Israel shall be saved with an everlasting
salvation. God formed the world to be inhabited. Look unto God and
be saved. Unto him every knee will bow and every tongue will swear.
* 46 * Bel bows. Nebo stoops. They could not deliver the burden. Listen to
me house of Jacob and the remnant of the house of Israel. To whom
will you liken me? I am God and there is none like me. Declaring
the end from the beginning, & from ancient times the things that are
not yet done, saying My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my
pleasure: My salvation shall not tarry. I will place salvation in
Zion for Israel my glory.
* 47 * Come sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon: there is no
throne. Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, thy shame shall be seen:
I will take vengeance. The LORD of hosts is our redeemer-the Holy
One of Israel. I was angry with my people. I have polluted my
inheritance, & given them into your hand: you showed them no mercy.
Two things will come to you in one day, the loss of children and
widowhood. For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said
in your heart I am, and none else beside me. Evil shall come upon
you. None shall save thee.
* 48 * Hear this O house of Jacob which swear by the name of the LORD but
not in truth nor in righteousness. Because I knew that you are
obstinate - I have from the beginning declared it to you lest you
should say my idol hath done them. I have refined you but not with
silver. I'll do it for mine own sake. How shall my name be polluted?
I will not give my glory unto another. I am the first. I am also the
last. I am the LORD thy God which leadeth thee by the way that thou
shouldest go. O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then
had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of
the sea. Say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob. There is
no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.
* 49 * Listen unto me. The LORD has called me from the womb; He has made my
mouth like a sharp sword. He said unto me, You're my servant, O
Israel, in whom I will be glorified. Then I said, I have labored in
vain. I have spent my strength for nothing - yet surely my judgment
is with the LORD. And now the Lord says that though Israel be not
gathered, yet will I be glorious in the Lord's eyes. God shall be my
strength. I will be given for a light to the Gentiles, to be his
salvation unto the end of the earth. Thus saith the LORD, in an
acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I
helped thee that you may tell the prisoners to go forth and those in
darkness to show themselves. I will make all my mountains a way,
and my highways shall be exalted. Can a woman forget her sucking
child that she should not have compassing on the son of her womb?
They may forget, yet will I not forget you. I am the LORD: they
shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
* 50 * Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement which I have put away,
saith the LORD. you have sold yourselves for your iniquities. Is my
hand shortened that it cannot redeem? The Lord God hasa given me
the tongue of the learned so I would know how to speak a word in
season to the weary. He has opened my ear. I gave my back to the
smiters. The Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be
confounded. The Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn
me? They all shall wax old as a garment; the moth will eat them up.
Who is amoung you that fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his
servant? Let him trust in the Lord's name, and stay upon his God.
* 51 * Hearken unto me - Ye that follow after righteousness. Look unto
Abraham you father - for I called him alone. The Lord will comfort
Zion. Hearken unto me, my people; A law will proceed from me. My
righteousness is near. Lift up your eyes to the heavens - they will
vanish like smoke. The earth will wax old like a garment but my
salvation will be for ever. Hearken unto me - the people in whose
heart is my law. Fear not the reproach of men. Awake, put on
strength O arm of the Lord. The redeemed of the LORD shall come
with singing unto Ziron. I am he that comforts you. Who are you
that you should be afraid of a man that will die. I have put my
words in your mouth. I have covered you in the shadow of my hand.
Stand up O Jerusalem. The Lord thy God has said that I have taken
from thy hand the cup of my fury. You will no more drink it again.
* 52 * Awake O Zion. Henceforth the uncircumcised and the unclean will no
longer come into thee. The LORD says you have sold yourselves for
nothing, and you will be redeemed without money. My people will know
my name; How beautiful are the feet of him that brings good tidings.
Break into joy. Sing together. The Lord has redeemed Jerusalem. The
ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Be ye clean
that beart the vessels of the LORD. My servant shall deal prudently.
* 53 * Who has believed our report. He will grow up as a tender plant. He
has no form nor comeliness. He is despised and rejected of men. A man
of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He was despised, we esteemed him
not. He has born our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was wounded
for our transgressions. We are healed with his stripes. Like sheep
we have gone astray. The LORD laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was taken from prison and judgment. He was stricken for the sins
of my people. He made his grave with the wicked - and with the rich
in his death. It pleased the LORD to bruise him. When you will make
his soul an offering for sin, the pleasure of the LORD will prosper
in his hand. I will divide him a portion with the great because he
poured out his soul unto death and was numbered with the
transgressors; he bare the sin of many and made intercession for the
transgressors.
* 54 * Sing O barren that didst not bear. The desolate has more children than
the married wife says the LORD. Fear not, for you won't be ashamed.
Your Maker is your husband. The LORD of hosts is his name. The God
of the whole earth shall he be called. In a little wrath I hid my
face from you but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you.
All thy children shall be taught of the LORD. In righteousness shall
you be established. No weapon that is formed against thee shall
prosper.
* 55 * Why do you spend money for that which is not bread; Come unto me and I
will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of
David. Seek you the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon Him
while he is near: My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your
ways my ways, saith the LORD. My word shall not return unto me void.
It will accomplish that I please.
* 56 * Keep judgment and do justice. Do not let the eunuch say I am a dry
tree. The Lord says to the eunuchs that keep my sabaths and choose
the things that please me, I will give in my house a place and a name
The sons of the stranger that serves the LORD and loves his name I
will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of
prayer. My house will be called a house of prayer for all people.
* 57 * The righteous perishes and no man lays it to heart. Draw near the sons
of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer. Are you not children of
transgression, enflaming yourselves with idols, killing the children
in the valleys. The high and lofty One that inhabits eternity - whose
name is holy says - I dwell in the high and holy place with him that
is of a contrite and humble spirit to revive the spirit of the
humble and the heart of the contrite ones. But the wicked are like
the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and
dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.
* 58 * Show my people their transgression. Yet they seek me daily and
delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness and
forsook not the ordinance of their god. They ask of justice and take
delight in approaching to God. Why have we fasted and you don't see
they ask. You find pleasure in the day of your fast. You fast for
strife and debate, to smite with wickedness. I have chosen the fast
to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo heavy burdens, let the
oppressed go free. Deal your bread to the hungery. Bring the poor to
your house. Cover the naked. Don't hide yourself from your own
flesh. Then shall you call and the LORD will answer.
* 59 * Behold the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither
his ear heavy that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated
between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you
that he will not hear. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste
to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are of iniquity. Wasting and
destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they know not. He
will repay according to their deeds. So they will fear the name of
the LORD. The Redeemer will come to Zion and to them that turn from
transgression in Jacob says the LORD.
* 60 * Darkness will cover the earth but the Lord's glory shall be seen upon
you. The gentiles will come to your light. Your sons will come from
afar. The sons of strangers shall build your walls. Their kings will
minister unto you. In my wrath I smote you, but in my favor have I
had mercy on you. The nation that will not serve you will perish.
The sons of them that afflicted you will come bending unto you. They
will call you the city of the LORD, the Zion of the Holy One of
Israel. For brass I will bring gold, for Iron - silver, for wood -
brass, and for stones - iron. Violence shall no more be heard in thy
land. The sun will no longer be your light by day but the LORD shall
be unto you an everlasting light. Thy people shall all be righteous.
They will inherit the land forever.
* 61 * The spirit of the Lord God is upon me. He has appointed me to preach
good tidings to the meek, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives and to proclaim the acceptable year of the
Lord and the day of vengeance of our God. They shall build the old
wastes and repair waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
Strangers will feed your flocks, aliens will be your plowmen. But ye
will be called the Priests of the LORD: Ministers of our God: I the
LORD love judgement, I hate robbery for burnt offering. I'll direct
their work in truth. I will rejoice in the LORD. He hath clothed me
with the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness.
* 62 * I will not hold my peace for Zion's sake until the salvation goes as a
lamp that burns. The Gentiles will see thy righteousness, kings--thy
glory and you will be called by a new name which the LORD's mouth
will name. You will no more be called Forsaken. The LORD delights in
you. As a bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God
rejoice in you. The LORD has sworn by his right hand Surely I will
no more give thy corn to be meat for your enemies. He that gathered
it shall eat it. Your salvation comes; his reward is with him. They
shall call them the holy people -- the redeemed of the LORD; sought
out, a city not forsaken.
* 63 * Who comes from Edom, glorious in his apparel, traveling in strength?
I -- that speak in righteousness - mighty to save. Why is your
clothes red? I have trodden the winepress alone. I will tread down
the people in my anger, and make them drunk in my fury. I will speak
of the LORD's loving-kindnesses toward the house of Israel. He said
they are my people. In his love and pity he redeemed them & carried
them in the days of old. But they rebelled and he was turned to be
their enemy. Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, & his people
You are our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us and Israel does
not acknowledge us. You are our father, our redeemer; your name is
from everlasting. Why have you made us to err from your ways and
hardened our heart. For your servants sake, remember the tribes of
your inheritance. We are yours, they were not called by your name.
* 64 * Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down. For since the
beginning men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor hath the
eye seen, what he hath prepared for him that waits for him. We are
all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy
rags; & we all do fade as a leaf; & our iniquities, like the wind
have taken us away. O LORD, you are are father; we are the clay,
you are our potter; and we are the work of your hand. Be not wroth
very sore, neither remember iniquity for ever: Our holy house where
our fathers praised thee, is burned with fire & our pleasant things
are laid waste.
* 65 * I am sought of them that asked not for me: I am found of them that
sought me not. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a
rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after
their own thoughts; The Lord says as the new wine is found in the
cluster and one says destroy it not; so will I do for my servants
sake that I may not destroy them all. I will bring a seed out of
Jacob. You are they that forsake the LORD. Therefore will I number
you to the sword. My servants shall eat, drink & rejoice, but you
will be hungry, thirsty, and ashamed. Behold I create new heavens
and a new earth: and the former will not be remembered nor come into
mind. They will not labor in vain. Before they call, I will answer.
and while they are yet speaking I will hear. They will not hurt nor
destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
* 66 * Thus saith the LORD, the heaven is my throne, and the earth is my
footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? To this man
will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and
trembleth at my word. I will choose their delusions and will bring
their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer. The
LORD will come with fire to render his anger with fury. I know their
works and their thoughts: I will gather all nations and they will
come and see my glory. As the new heavens and the new earth which I
will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your
seed and your name remain.
