Job |
3 |
Laments day of birth, the thing that he had feared had come upon him |
2 |
Eliphaz |
4-5 |
Will you be upset if we speak? Who perished being innocent? A vision. Is man more just than God? No safety for sinners. Commit cause to God. Happy is the man whom God corrects, he will heal. |
3 |
Job |
6-7 |
O that my grief were weighed. Pity should be showed to afflicted friends. Teach me, I do not see iniquity in my tongue. My days are spent without hope |
4 |
Bildad |
8 |
How long will you speak these things. Does God pervert judgment? Look to the past, God does not cast out a perfect man. |
5 |
Job |
9-10 |
How can a man be just with God. I am afraid of my sorrows. Why did you bring me out of the womb? |
6 |
Zophar |
11 |
Shall no man make you ashamed? God exacts less than thy iniquity. |
7 |
Job |
12-14 |
I am as one mocked of his neighbor. Will you speak wickedly for God? Make me to know my sin. If a man die, shall he live again? |
8 |
Eliphaz |
15 |
Your own mouth condemns you. The wicked travail with pain all his days. |
9 |
Job |
16-17 |
Miserable comforters are ye all. I could speak as you do; if your soul were in my soul’s stead. The graves are ready for me. Where now is my hope? |
10 |
Bildad |
18 |
Why are we counted as beasts in your eyes? The wicked is cast into a net by his own feet. |
11 |
Job |
19 |
How long will you break me with words. My kinsfolk and friends have failed me. Have pity. I know my redeemer lives. |
12 |
Zophar |
20 |
Don’t you know the past teaches that the wicked succeed for only a short time. This is the portion of a wicked man from God. |
13 |
Job |
21 |
Is my complaint to men. Why do the wicked prosper? Shall any teach God? I know what you are thinking about me - but you are wrong. |
14 |
Eliphaz |
22 |
Can a man be profitable to God. Your wickedness is great. If you return to God you will be built up. |
15 |
Job |
23-24 |
My stroke is heavier than my groaning. I would like to present my case to Him. Why do the wicked prosper. They are exalted for a little while. |
16 |
Bildad |
25 |
Dominion and fear are with him. Ho can a man be justified with God. |
17 |
Job |
26-31 |
How have you helped. Who can understand the thunder of his power? Who has taken away my judgment. I will hold fast my righteousness. The fear of the Lord is wisdom. Departing from evil is understanding |
18 |
Elihu |
32-37 |
Great men are not always wise. Stand up if you can answer me. He does not give account of his matters. God will not do wickedly. Job adds rebellion unto his sin. Is it right to say my righteousness is more than God’s? God is excellent in power. He will not afflict. |
19 |
The LORD |
38-40 41 |
Answer thou me! Shall he that contends with God instruct HIM? |
Job |
40 |
I am vile - what shall I say |
|
42 |
I ‘ve spoken when I understood not. I repent in dust & ashes. |
||
The LORD |
Thou has not spoken correctly of me as Job has. The Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. |

3. Job, himself was offering sacrifices.
But if Job were not Jewish - then it could have been later.
Others Believe.
1. Exodus or Judges
2. Kings or Captivity
E. The writer is unknown. When the book was written is unknown
Some want a late date of before 200 BC. But Job was found with dead sea scrolls in old Hebrew format which would date it much earlier.
Most date it between 600-400 BC. If Job wrote it, and was a contemporary of Abraham, then it could have been much earlier.
Hebrew tradition
Moses wrote it while in Midian. (which bordered on the land of Midian. Others have suggested the time of Soloman, Babylonian captivity, Post exile, or as late as the Macabean dynasty.

Job’s Soliloquy (chapter 3).
This does not appear to be be spoken too the three friends. A soliloquy is something one says to himself.
Job does not curse God as Satan predicted but turns the curse on himself.
Jesus said:
Mt 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Job’s heart was full of despair. It just overflows at this point.
He has lost all of his material wealth.
He has lost 10 children in one fell blow
His wife has abondoned him as hopeless “curse God and die”
His theology has been proven wrong.
1. Job says some things that he will repent of. He says some things that he admits even as he is saying them that are “desparate”
2. Contrast Job’s sayings with what is tradition thought of with a birth. The joy, the gladness.
3. When I am troubled, this is a passage that turn to in order to obtain strength.
4. Jeremiah 20:14-18, when Jeremiah was tired of his mission .
14 ¶ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.
16 And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
17 Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.
18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
5. That which I feared has come up on me.
Satan willl use our fears against us -- if we allow him.
We need to turn our fears into strong holds of faith.
THE DEBATE BEGINS WITH CHAPTER 4
Job can be hard book to understand it is like proverbs full of “ wise saysings” - proverbs - not promises. The friends say things that are often true but are not promised to be true.
Note that Job feels he has lost touch with God. That God has abandoned him. He is looking for God and cannot find him.
1 Cor 3:19 Paul quotes Eliphaz
1 Cor 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
Job 5:13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: (AV)
Job 5:17 ¶ Behold, happy [is] the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: (AV)
Their message is not so much wrong as mis-applied. We need to be very careful about. not mis applying God’s word.
Gal 6:1
1 ¶ Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
5 For every man shall bear his own burden.
6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
1Co 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Look at conclusion.
1. Job Repents
2. God accepts Job
3. The three friends are told to offer sacrifice
Why Do the righteous Suffer?
Rom 8:17¶
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.Php 1:29
For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;Phip 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
2Ti 2:12
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:2Ti 3:12
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.Heb 2:9
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.Heb 2:10
¶ For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.Heb 2:18
For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.Heb 5:8
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;Heb 7:23
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:Heb 9:26
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.Heb 11:25
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;Jas 5:10
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of and of patience. 11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.1Pe 2:19
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.1Pe 2:20
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.1Pe 2:21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:1Pe 2:23
Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:1Pe 3:14
But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
1Pe 3:17
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.1Pe 4:13 -16 13
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.1Pe 4:19
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator..Heb 13:12
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.2 Corinthians 1:
¶ And our hope of you is steadfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. 8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
