1969 MUSTANG MACH I

In 1969, Ford was looking to reclaim their dominance of the American auto industry when they introduced a retooled Mustang that combined horsepower with comfort, while retaining the classic style. Their result was an instant success with one of the most popular muscle cars to ever hit the highways, the MACH I.

Recently restored by K.A.R. Auto Group in Columbus, Ohio, this Mach I was originally built in San Jose on January 21st 1969 and shipped to Dallas, Texas where it was purchased on February 5th of that same year. It's second owner brought the car to Ohio in the late 1980's and used it as a daily driver until 1994 when he decided to restore the vehicle. Soon realizing that the project was a major task, he rebuilt the engine before selling it to me in January, 1995.

1969 Mustang Mach I

The car was sold to me with faded original paint, interior removed, and a rapidly deteriorating driver's side floorboard. The originally white interior had been spraypainted black, carpet and all, with all newer parts a distinct shade of "refridgerator white". While the idea behind the restore was to produce a weekend driver, it was determined that the car had more going for it that
originally thought. All other metal in the car was original and rust-free, the shock towers were mint, and the frame was straight with no signs of damage of any kind. Most of the interior parts were in great shape, outside of a bad paint job.

The decision was made to take the car to near show quality, using as many of the original parts as possible. Once the mechanics were brought up to specs, the floorboard was replaced, all chrome removed and body was taken to bare metal and repainted. The engine was disassembled, parts sandblasted or replaced, repainted, and reassembled. The engine compartment was also stripped to bare metal brought to showroom condition before the engine was replaced.

351 V-8 4V (Windsor)

The interior is completely original, dashpad and all, with only new upholstery on the seats. For a sound system, it sports a working AM radio with dash speaker.

Once the major retoration was complete, the car sat in storage, barring minor maintenance, for nearly a year. The last piece was a set of 1970 Magnum 500's, which are the only non-factory parts on this vehicle. Overall, this Mustang has gone traffic hazard to show stopper in less than 2 years. It is as much a joy to show as it is to drive.
