Overview

It's pretty easy to set up Personal Web pages, because we have already set up the server for you. You only need to create your Web documents, move them into your pubhtml directory, and then let the world know how to get to them.

Writing HTML

The hardest part is actually writing the page. Each page is a separate text file, with special codes for formatting. The codes are known as HTML, for HyperText Markup Language. You place the codes around words, paragraphs and phrases to alter the appearance of the document, or to allow jumps to other documents.

If you're interested, here are a number of excellent tutorials which explain how to mark up a document with HTML.

  5. HTML Overview

It might be easier if you have an existing document to look at. This will give you an idea of how the codes really work. You might want to save this document to your disk, and then open it with a text editor to see the actual HTML code used. If it seems fairly obvious, feel free to modify your copy with your own stuff, and upload it, as explained in the next section.

There are even pages out there that will create your page for you. Here's one to try, but you will still need to upload the page when you're finished writing it.

  1. WebSpawner: Create a Page

There are a number of programs that can help write or convert Web pages for you, on your own PC. I recommend HTML Writer. For beginners, they might be more trouble than they're worth; the resulting pages could be a mess, and you really have to know what you are doing to fix them. Perhaps you should stay away from them until you have a really good grasp of how to format HTML. However, nothing's lost if you goof-up. Practice makes perfect!

Uploading Your Completed Pages

Once you have your page written, you need to put it on our server, in your "pubhtml" directory.

Use your FTP application (WS FTP for PC users) you must first establish a PPP session to us. Start your FTP tool and open a connection to ftp.iwaynet.net, use your login name and password to connect. You will see your personal directory with a subdirectory named pubhtml. Change into the pubhtml directory and transfer your homepage file(s) from your computer to our server. Make sure the name of your Home Page is either "home.html" or "index.html", but not both!! See the note below about case and filename extensions.

It is very important to make sure that your Web page has a file name that ends with ".html" or ".htm". It is also recommended that you keep all filenames lowercase. UNIX computers are case sensitive. This means that they distinguish between upper and lower case characters and treat them differently. Our servers are UNIX based (and so are nearly all other Internet servers) and so case sensitivety is an issue. Our server will treat News.html and news.html as two different and distinct documents.

Advertising Your New Pages

Once your page is loaded, you will want to tell other people how to access them. You first need to know the URL to give out.

Your URL always starts with "http://www.iwaynet.net/". Next you must use the tilde, or "~" character, followed by your login name.

So, if you login as "bob", your URL is:

http://www.iwaynet.net/~bob/

Once you know the URL for your page all you need to do is tell the world about it! You can Email "webmaster@iwaynet.net" and ask to be placed on IwayNet's Corporate/Personal Web Listing, as well as publish your page on many of the available search engines!
