The Old Testament Book of Jonah

* CHAP * COMMENTS

The word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai saying
* 1 *Arise, go to Ninevah and cry against it for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah went to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish from the Lord's presence. The Lord sent a great wind so the ship was like to be broken. The sailors were afraid and cried to their gods. They threw the ship's wares overboard. But Jonah was asleep. The shipmaster told Jonah to call upon his God that they perish not. The sailors cast lots to determine who had caused their troubles. The lot fell on Jonah. They asked Jonah to tell them his occupation, & where he was from. He said that he was a Hebrew that feared the LORD, the God of heaven that had made the sea and dry land. The men asked him why he had done this? Then they asked what shall we do? Jonah told them to throw him overboard. The men tried to row to land, but when they failed, they said We beseech thee, O LORD, don't let us peris for this man's life and don't charge us with innocent blood. So they cast Jonah into the sea, and the sea ceased from raging. The LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. He was in the fishes belly 3 days and 3 nights.
* 2 *Jonah prayed unto the Lord from the fish's belly. "When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD." And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
* 3 *The word of the LORD came to Jonah the 2nd time, go unto Nineveh that great city and preach what I bid thee. Jonah arose & went to Nineveh. It took 3 days to go thru the city. When a day's journey in the city Jonah said "Nineveh will be overthrown in 40 days. The people believed God & proclaimed a fast. The king said "Don't eat or drink, but cry unto God: Turn from evil & violence perhaps God will repent & we perish not." God saw they had turned from their evil & repented of the evil he said he would do.
* 4 *But Jonah was displeased and he prayed, LORD I knew you were gracious, merciful, slow to anger, of great kindness and would repent of the evil. Now take my life for it is better for me to die than to live. The Lord asked Jonah if he did well to be angry. Jonah left the city and sit under a booth he made to see what would happen to the city. God caused a gourd to grow up over Jonah as a shadow for him. Jonah was glad about the gourd. But God sent a worm to smite the gourd that it withered. The sun beat on Jonah's head and he wished in himself to die. God asked Jonah if he did well to be angry. The Lord said, you had pity for the gourd on which you had not labored. It came up in a night and perished in a night. Shouldn't I spare Nineveh wherein are more than 120 thousand people.
