Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . .
. . . For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8: 35,38-39 KJV
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* 1 * Paul's salutation. The Gospel is God's power for salvation. God's wrath is revealed against all unrighteousness. Homosexuality is condemned.
* 2 * Judge not -- God will render to every man according to his deeds. He is a Jew whose praise is [not of man but] of God.
* 3 * What advantage hath the Jew? All have sinned! We are justified freely through grace.
* 4 * What did Abraham find? The promise was through the righteousness of faith.
* 5 * Being justified by faith we have peace with God through Jesus and glory in tribulations. Christ died for us while we were yet sinners.
* 6 * We are buried with Christ by baptism so we should walk in a new life. We are dead to sin but alive unto God. We were the servants of sin but have become servants to God. The wages of sin are death.
* 7 * We are dead to the law through the body of Christ so we should live in newness of spirit. Evil is present with me even when I would do good.
* 8 * There is no condemnation for Christians who walk after the spirit instead of the flesh. Those in the flesh cannot please God. Those who have the indwelling of the Spirit are in the spirit and have received the spirit of adoption. All things work for good to those that love God. Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect or who shall separate us from the love of God?
* 9 * Paul weeps over the Israelites. Not all of Abraham's seed were the children of promise. God shows mercy to whom he wills. Israel did not attain to law of righteousness -- because they sought it, not by faith, -- but by the works of the law.
* 10 * Israel has a zeal for God, but has not submitted to God"s righteousness. Christ is the end of the law to believers. Confess and believe God raised Christ for salvation. Whosoever shall call upon the Lord shall be saved. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word.
* 11 * Has God cast away Israel? God saves by grace - not works. Gentiles are like branches from a wild olive grafted into an olive tree. Behold, the goodness and severity of God. Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God.
* 12 * Present your body a living sacrifice to God. We are members of 1 body so don't think more of self than you should. Love one another. Be fervent in spirit hopeful, patient, prayerful, benevolent, hospitable. Live peaceably with all men. Vengeance is the Lord's.
* 13 * Let every soul be subject to the higher powers. Render everyone their due. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Awake out of sleep, Put on the Lord Jesus. Make not provision to fullfill the lusts of the flesh.
* 14 * Who are you to judge another's servant? Observance of days & foods. No man lives or dies to himself. We are the Lord's and will stand before his judgement seat. Do not cause your brother to stumble.
* 15 * The strong should bear with the weak - not please himself. What was written before was for our learning. Receive one another so that ye can glorify God with your mind and heart. Christ came as a minister to confirm the promises made to the fathers. As the apostle to the gentiles, Paul has tried to preach where Christ was not known. Paul plans to come to Rome on route to Spain after he delivers the gift to Jerusalem that the churches of Achaia & Macedonia sent.
* 16 * Paul greets individuals. Provides a reference for Phebe. Warns to mark those that cause divisions. Closing of letter.
