The New Testament Book of 1 Timothy

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptations and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

1Timothy 6: 6-9 KJV

* CHAP * COMMENTS

* 1 * Paul to Timothy my own son in the faith. I asked you to stay at Ephesus when I went into Macedonia to charge some that they teach no other doctrine. The end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned. Some desire to teach without understanding. The law is made for the lawless and disobedient. I thank Christ who put me into the ministry who was a blasphemer and a persecutor through ignorance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief. I charge thee son Timothy to war a good warfare holding faith & a good conscience. Hymenaeus and Alexander have made shipwreck of their faith.
* 2 * I exhort that prayers be made for all men, for kings and all in authority. God would have all to be saved. Christ is the one mediator between God and men. I am ordained a preacher & apostle, a teacher of the gentiles in faith. I will that men pray everywhere and that women adorn themselves in modest apparel. Let a woman learn in silence with all subjection. I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man.
* 3 * If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desires a good work. The qualifications of a bishop, a deacon, and their wives. I write hoping to come to you soon.
* 4 * The Spirit says that in the latter times some will depart from the faith. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ. Refuse old wives' tales. Exercise unto Godliness, bodily exercise profiteth little. Let no man despise thy youth. Give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee. Meditate on these things. Give yourself wholly to them.
* 5 * Rebuke not an Elder. Honor widows that are widows indeed. If any provide not for his own he hath denied the faith and is worse than infidel. Qualifications for taking in a widow. I will that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house. Let elders that rule well be counted of double honor. Do nothing by partiality.
* 6 * Let servants honor their own master. Withdraw from those that believe that gain is Godliness. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Those that would be rich fall into temptation & a snare. Fight the good fight of faith. Charge the rich to not be high minded, to trust in God instead of riches, to do good, to be ready to distribute. Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust. Avoid profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called.
