The New Testament Book of Hebrews

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV

* CHAP * COMMENTS

* 1 * God has spoken to us by his son, by whom he made the worlds and who is better than the angels.
* 2 * Therefore, we should give heed to the things which we have heard. One testified that man was made a little lower than the angels but all things were put under his feet. Jesus was made lower than the angels so he might taste death for all men and be a merciful High Priest.
* 3 * Consider Christ who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also was Moses. Moses was faithful as a servant, but Christ was faithful as a son. Harden not your heart through the deceitfulness of sin, lest ye not enter into God's rest as happened to some of Israel.
* 4 * Let us fear and labor lest we come short of entering into God's rest. God's word is quick, powerful, and sharp. All things are open to His eyes. Let us come boldly to the throne to obtain grace & mercy because we have a High Priest that was tempted as are we -- yet without sin.
* 5 * High Priests were called to offer gifts & sacrifices for sins and to show compassion. Men take not this honor for themselves but are called of God as were Aaron & Christ. Christ was called a priest after the order of Melchisedec. There is much to say but we are dull of hearing and have need to be taught 1st principles when we should be teaching others.
* 6 * Therefore, leaving the principles let us go on unto perfection since it is impossible to renew any that fall away after once being enlighted. God is not unrighteous to forget your work of love, so follow after them who through faith & patience inherit the promises.
* 7 * Consider the greatness of Melchisedec. Christ is made a priest after the order of Melchisedec. A change in the priesthood results in a change in the law. Christ's priesthood is better than Levitical priesthood.
* 8 * We have a high priest -- who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, who has a more excellent ministry, who is the mediator of a better covenant which is established on better promises and is the fullfillment of the promise that the Lord gave for a new covenant.
* 9 * The first covenant had ordinances of divine service and a worldly sanctuary. The high priest alone went into the 2nd once a year with the blood of goats and calves signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest. But Christ who is a high priest of good things to come by a greater tabernacle and with his own blood entered once into the holy place obtaining eternal redemption for us and becoming the mediator of a new testament. The first testament was dedicated with the blood of calves and of goats. But once at the end of the world has Christ appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
* 10 * The law had the shadow and not the image of the good things to come. God will put the new covenant in their hearts and minds and will remember their sins no more. Let us hold fast our faith & provoke one another to love & good works. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy -- How much greater punbishment will be reserved for one who has trodden under foot the Son of God?
* 11 * Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith's honor roll.
* 12 * Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the author & finisher of our faith. Despise not the chastening of the Lord. Ye have not come to the mount that could be touched but unto the city of the living God, the Church of the firstborn.
* 13 * Various commands and the closing of the book.
