The New Testament Book of James

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world

James 1:26-27 KJV

* CHAP * COMMENTS

* 1 * Salutation to book. Various commands are given: Rejoice when you are tempted, the trying of our faith works patience. Ask wisdom of God in faith. Rejoice if you are rich OR poor. Do not say, "I am tempted of God. Every good gift comes from God. Lay aside sin and receive the word. Be doers of the law -- not justhearers. Pure religion before God is to visit the fatherless and widows.
* 2 * Do not have respect of persons. What does it profit to have faith without works. Even the devils believe and tremble.
* 3 * The tongue is a little member but it boasts great things. No man can tame it. Earthly wisdom is far different than the wisdom from above.
* 4 * Ye lust and cannot have. Friendship with the world is enmity with God. Resist the devil and draw nigh to God. Humble yourself in the sight of God. Speak not evil of one another. Remember God in your plans. To not do the good we know we should do is sin.
* 5 * Rich men will cry for the spoiling of their riches gotten in a corrupt manner. Be patient for the coming of the Lord, as the farmer is for the rain. Take the prophets for an example. Do not swear. Pray for the sick. Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another. Prayer availeth much. Bring the erring back to the truth
